Block: Prototype test

Updated over a week ago

The Prototype Block allows you to integrate Figma prototypes into your unmoderated studies, enabling participants to interact with your designs while capturing valuable quantitative and qualitative data including success rates, heat maps, and user interactions. Set up task-based scenarios to gather comprehensive insights on your designs.

Setting up your Figma file

Prototype file setup

To reduce load time for participants and easiest task setup we recommend creating a dedicated Figma file that only contains the necessary frames and connections for your prototype test.

Figma prototype permissions

Set your Figma prototype permissions to Anyone can view and can view to ensure participants are able to access your prototype to complete the test.

Password protected prototypes are supported and you will be required to provide a copy of the password to participants when importing the file in the builder.

Importing the prototype

Copy and paste the share link from Figma and select import to load your prototype into the builder.

Allowing Askable access to your Figma account

The first time you import a Figma prototype we may require permission to access your Figma account. You will be prompted to allow Askable to access your account so you can view and interact with prototype designs directly from your Figma workspace on Askable.

We take your privacy and data seriously when you grant access; we only view the imported prototypes related to the test. We cannot access any other files or projects in your Figma account and all collected data is used solely for prototype testing purposes.

You can revoke these permissions at any time by visiting your Figma account settings and removing our application's access.

Setting up the task

Writing your prototype task instructions

Your task instructions should clearly communicate what you want participants to do with your prototype. For goal-based tasks, keep instructions action-oriented and specific while avoiding revealing the exact solution path. For free explore tasks, focus on what you want participants to discover or evaluate about the overall experience.

Goal based or Free explore tasks

Select between Goal based and Free explore depending on your research objectives:

  • Goal based: Participants work toward completing a specific task with a defined endpoint

  • Free explore: Participants freely navigate and share their thoughts about the prototype experience

Picking a goal screen (Goal based tasks only)

For goal-based tasks, click the "Pick a goal screen" button. Navigate in the prototype preview to the screen the participant must reach to complete the task and select "Set as goal screen."

Editing the start screen

The start screen will be automatically set either by the prototype link or the first flow starting point in the linked file. To edit the default start screen, click on the start screen, select any screen in your Figma prototype and select "Set as start screen" in the footer. Your selected screen will now be the default screen in your preview.

Note: For goal-based tasks, this will reset your goal screen to ensure there is a connected path between your new start screen and goal screen.

Editing your prototype

Once your study is live, it's important to keep your prototype exactly as is. Making changes to a prototype during an active study can disrupt the participant experience in several ways – tasks might become impossible to complete, results could be recorded incorrectly, and your study results data may become inconsistent.

If you need to make changes to your prototype, we recommend creating a duplicate of your Figma prototype file and setting up a new study. This ensures your current study's results remain reliable while allowing you to test your updated design.

Troubleshooting importing prototype links

My file and prototype are public but it is still failing to import

Allow copying, sharing, and exporting from the Figma file share settings to allow for a public file to correctly import the prototype with the necessary data.

  • Click Share in the right sidebar

  • Select the current sharing permissions for the file to open up the Share settings

  • Under Advanced, select the Viewers can copy, share, and export from this file setting

I don’t have a Dev or Full Figma seat

Due to recent changes instated by Figma as of 17th November 2025, updated rate limits to Figma accounts based on seat type of the user may impact the ability to import prototype links. Learn more about Figma's rate limits

Figma applies rate limits to API requests based on your Figma seat type and plan. If you have a View or Collab seat in Figma, you may experience slower imports or missing frame thumbnails due to these limits. Users with Dev or Full seats have higher rate limits and are less likely to encounter issues.

If you're experiencing import problems:

  • Wait a few minutes and try importing again

  • Check with your Figma workspace admin about your seat type

  • Users who frequently run prototype tests may benefit from upgrading to a Dev or Full seat

We are currently investigating new methods to prevent this from effecting our users.
