Overview
Before you join a study, we run a quick check to make sure your microphone, camera, and internet connection are working properly. This helps make sure the researcher will be able to capture data that is useful and clear.
If you didn't pass the check, it means your setup didn't meet the quality requirements after 3 attempts.
What does this mean?
If you didn’t pass the check, this means you won't be able to join this study.
But don't worry - you are not blocked from Askable. You can still join future studies as long as you pass the pre-study check.
Why didn't my check pass?
One of the following wasn't working well enough:
Internet connection — Your connection was too weak or disconnected.
Microphone — We couldn't pick up your voice clearly enough.
Camera — We couldn't see your face clearly enough.
You get 3 chances to pass each check. If your microphone, video or internet doesn’t meet the requirements, we'll let you know and help you fix it.
If you still don’t satisfy the requirements on the 3rd attempt, you won’t be able to participate in that specific study.
How to ensure you are set up for success in future
Internet
Use Wi-Fi rather than mobile data where possible
Sit closer to your router
Avoid using other apps or streaming while doing the check
Microphone
Use headphones with a built-in mic if possible
Make sure your microphone isn't muted
Sit in a quiet room away from background noise
Camera
Make sure your face is clearly visible and centred on screen
Remove hats, sunglasses, or anything covering your face
Face a window or lamp so your face is well lit
Avoid having a bright light or window behind you
I've done studies before without any issues
This check is new and applies to certain study types. Even if you've completed studies before, the check runs every time you enter a study that requires it. It's not a penalty - it's there to help you have a smooth session.
