This feature is only available for Live website tests in unmoderated studies. It is not supported in survey studies or other usability test blocks.
Follow-ups let you guide participants through a sequence of tasks and questions on the same website, all in one session. Instead of a single task, you can ask a participant to complete a task, follow up with another, and check in with a quick question, while they stay in context on the website the whole time.
They appear one at a time in a floating window using the browser picture-in-picture that sits alongside the website, so the participant is guided step by step without ever losing their place. Follow-ups are ideal for usability testing where a realistic journey matters: find a product, add it to cart, then locate the returns policy, with a question or two along the way.
Turning on follow-ups
Add a Live Website Test block to your unmoderated study and set it up as usual (URL, task, recording options).
Toggle on Follow-ups.
When follow-ups are enabled, a couple of things change automatically:
Supported browsers. Follow-ups use picture-in-picture, which is supported only in Chromium browsers like Chrome and Edge. Which may impact recruitment as participants are required to have a compatible browser prior to starting the study.
Task education screen is turned on and locked. Participants always see a short intro screen that explains how the floating window works before they begin. This can't be switched off while follow-ups are enabled, because it's how participants learn to keep the website tab open and follow the pop-out.
The builder preview updates to show the floating window and the intro screen, so you can see roughly what participants will experience.
Adding follow-up blocks
Once follow-ups are on, you'll see an Add follow-up button nested under your Live Website Test block in the left-hand menu. Follow-ups are shown as a slim, indented list connected to their parent block, so it's clear they belong to that test.
Select Add follow-up to choose from:
Sub-Tasks
A sub-task is a follow-up that gives the participant another thing to do on the website. It behaves just like the parent Live Website Test task: the participant reads the new instructions in the floating window and continues on the same site, with the tab kept open. Each sub-task has:
Task: the instruction for the participant (for example, "Now find the store locator and search for your nearest branch").
Details (optional): extra context or constraints, the same as a standard Live Website Test task.
Write sub-tasks the way you'd write any good task: action-oriented, in the participant's own language, and clear about what "done" looks like without giving away the exact path.
Questions
Multiple choice, open answer, and opinion scale follow-ups work the same as the standard question blocks you already use, with two differences:
No images: Follow-up questions display in a small floating window, so images aren't available to keep the layout clean on any screen.
No conditional logic: Follow-up questions are shown to every participant in order. Conditional logic isn't available on follow-ups.
Follow-ups run in the order they appear in the list. You can drag to reorder them within the follow-up group, but follow-up blocks can't be dragged in or out of the group, they always stay attached to their parent Live Website Test.
What participants experience
When a participant reaches your Live Website Test, they first see the task education screen explaining how the floating window works.
After they confirm, the floating window opens with the first set of instructions, and they open the website to begin.
They work through the first task instructions and then each follow-up one at a time in the floating window; completing tasks and answering questions, while the website stays open beside it.
If they need it, they can re-open the instructions or re-open the website at any time from their Askable tab.
Because follow-ups rely on picture-in-picture, participants need to be on a desktop computer using a Chromium browser (Chrome or Edge). When you enable follow-ups, your study's device requirement is automatically set to desktop only so only eligible participants are recruited. Turning follow-ups off restores your normal device options.
Follow-ups in your results
Your results are organised exactly as they are today, with follow-ups clearly labelled so you can see the relationship to the parent test:
Follow-up questions and sub-tasks carry a Follow-up label wherever they appear in individual responses and summary results.
Sub-task results appear as their own block, labelled Live website test (Sub-task), with the time on task and the website URL carried through from the parent test.
Session recordings are still chaptered by block, so you can jump straight to any task or follow-up.
