The Live Mobile Test block allows you to observe participants completing tasks on mobile apps or websites directly on their mobile devices. This block is perfect for evaluating real user experiences with native apps, mobile websites or testing mobile-specific interactions in their natural environment.
Recruit: Studies with Live mobile tests require participants to use a mobile device. Recruit settings will be restricted to Mobile only.
Setting up your Live mobile test
Adding a task link
Add a URL or deep link to provide a specific starting point for participants. The type of link you provide will determine how participants access your mobile experience. If no link is provided, participants can manually navigate to the task from the Askable app.
Website links
Standard URLs will open in the participant's default mobile browser
Ensure the website is mobile-responsive and doesn't require special login credentials
Verify the URL works correctly on mobile devices before publishing your study
App store links (Install/Open)
Links to the App Store (iOS) or Google Play Store (Android) allow participants to install your app or open it if already installed
iOS example: https://apps.apple.com/app/example-app/id123456789
Android example: https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.example.app
App deep links
Direct links that open specific screens within your app
Requires participants to have the app already installed on their device
Example: myapp://feature/screen
Note: Consider adding screener questions to confirm participants have the app installed before they begin the study
Links for specific devices and operating systems
If your link is designed for a specific device or operating system, ensure you screen participants accordingly in the recruit settings:
Add qualifying screener questions to confirm participants have the correct device and operating system version
Testing multiple devices or operating systems
Use conditional logic within a single study
Add a multiple choice question early in your study to determine the participant's device
Use conditional logic to navigate participants to specific Live mobile test blocks based on their device response
Each block can contain the appropriate platform-specific link
Create separate studies per platform
Duplicate your study and replace the Live mobile test task link with the device-specific link
Set device requirements in the recruit settings to screen participants based on their device
This approach provides cleaner separation between platforms and simpler study setup
Setting up the task
Writing your live mobile test task instructions
When creating your task, be clear and specific about what you want participants to accomplish. The task should be action-oriented and written in natural language that reflects how a real user would think about their goal.
Adding task details
The "Details" field gives you space to provide additional context or specific parameters for the task. Use this area to:
Clarify any constraints or requirements
Provide scenario information to make the task more realistic
Include specific details participants will need (like dates, quantities, etc.)
Good task details help participants understand exactly what they need to accomplish without giving away the specific solution path.
Recording Options
Microphone recording
Captures the participant's verbal think-aloud comments
Helps you understand and hear their thought process
Toggle on for richer qualitative insights about the participant experience
Screen recording
Captures everything happening on the participant's screen
Essential for observing navigation paths and interactions
Toggle on to see exactly how participants interact to complete the task
Note: Camera recording is not available for Live mobile test blocks. Participants will only share their screen and microphone during the test. For most studies, enabling both recording options provides the most comprehensive view of the participant experience.
