Create an AI moderated study to conduct qualitative research interviews at scale. An AI researcher will guide participants through conversational interviews based on your research goals, asking follow-up questions and probing deeper into responses.
Creating an AI moderated study
To create a new AI moderated study, select “Create new’ in the side bar or head to your Studies page and click the 'Create' button above the studies table. Select 'Create AI moderated study' to open the study setup.
Start by configuring your study settings:
Study title: Give your study a descriptive name
Device requirements: Choose whether participants can join from any device, mobile only, or desktop only
Interview language: Select the language the AI researcher will use when speaking with participants
Study setup options
Choose how you want to build your study:
AI guided setup: Describe your research focus and add context to automatically generate research goals. Best for getting started quickly or when you want AI assistance structuring your research.
Start from scratch: Begin with a blank template and manually add your own research goals and context. Best when you have clearly defined research objectives.
AI Guided Setup
Step 1: Study overview
Describe the main focus of your research. Explain what you're trying to understand or learn from your audience in a few sentences. You can also select from preset research focuses to help frame your study.
Step 2: Add context
Provide background information to help the AI ask more informed and relevant questions during interviews. Context is organised into four sections:
How would you describe the company? Share details about your organisation, industry, and background.
Describe the product, feature or service? Explain what you're researching, including relevant details participants should understand.
How would you describe the interview audience? Describe who you'll be speaking with and any relevant characteristics.
Specific questions or assumptions you want to explore? Add any particular topics, hypotheses, or questions you want the research to address.
Step 3: Review research goals
Research goals are generated based on your study overview and context. Review the suggested goals and make any adjustments, you can also make any changes to research goals or context once in the study builder:
Edit goal text directly to refine the focus
Drag goals to reorder them
Add additional research goals
Remove goals that aren't relevant
When you're satisfied with your research goals, click 'Build study' to open the study builder with your generated content.
Build study from scratch
Selecting 'Start from scratch' opens an empty study builder where you can manually configure your study.
Plan
The Plan tab is where you structure your interview. Every study includes three elements:
Introduction: The opening statement participants see before starting the interview. This is pre-filled with a default message but can be customised.
Research goals: The topics and questions you want the AI researcher to explore with participants. Add research goals by clicking 'Add research goal'.
Thank you: The closing statement displayed after the interview ends. This is pre-filled with a default message but can be customised.
Context
The Context tab is where you provide background information for the AI researcher. This context helps the AI ask more relevant questions and better understand participant responses.
Add context blocks by clicking 'Add context'. Each context block includes:
Title: A label to organise your context (e.g., Company background, Product details, Target audience)
Context: The information you want the AI researcher to know
You can add multiple context blocks to organise different types of information. All context is combined and used by the AI researcher during interviews.
Preview your AI moderated interview
Preview your study at any time by clicking the Start button in the participant preview. The participant preview shows exactly how the AI moderator will achieve your research goals and conduct the interview with participants.
Click 'Refresh preview' to update the preview after making changes to your study or to reset the interview back to the start screen.
Editing a submitted study
Once a study has been submitted for review or is actively recruiting participants, the study build cannot be modified. If you need to make changes to your research goals or context, you'll need to create a new study.
To make changes while your study is 'In review' prior to being approved, click the menu button in the header and select 'Revert to draft'. This returns your study to draft status where you can make changes and re-submit when ready.
