Askable Sessions Troubleshooting (Participants)

Can't join your session? We're here to help!

☝️ Heads up: if you're using anything other than Google Chrome, switch now. We support other browsers but Chrome works best. Askable Sessions works on both computer and mobile.

🎤 My camera or microphone isn't working

Askable Sessions needs permission to use your camera and microphone. If you see the browser pop-up, click Allow.

To check camera & mic access in Chrome

  1. Click the lock icon to the left of the Askable URL in the address bar.

  2. Select Site Settings.

  3. Toggle on both Camera and Microphone, then refresh.

Still not working?

  • Make sure camera and mic are enabled before or during the call.

  • Make sure no other app (Zoom, Teams, FaceTime) is using your camera.

  • On mobile, turn off Bluetooth unless you're using Bluetooth headphones.

  • Test your camera/mic by recording a quick video — if that fails too, it's a device issue.

🤖 My AI interview froze (often right after the camera & mic check)

Almost always a permissions/browser issue: allow camera + mic (above), turn off VPN/ad-blockers, refresh, and rejoin from My opportunities. 🖥️ Sharing your screen

Click Share your screen at the bottom of the call, then pick the screen, window, or tab to share.

☝️ Top tip: for privacy, share a window or single Chrome tab rather than your whole screen. If you do share the full screen, hide anything sensitive first.

Screen-share permission denied?

macOS: System Settings > Privacy & Security > enable your browser for Microphone, Camera, and Screen & System Audio Recording.

Windows: Settings > Privacy > App permissions > enable your browser for Camera, Microphone, and Screen Recording.

🌐 Network issues

If you've tried everything and it still won't work, your network may be blocking part of the call. Switch between Wi-Fi and mobile data, then exit and rejoin the call.

🙋 The researcher isn't here / my session was marked complete while I waited

  • Double-check the time and time zone of your booking in My opportunities.

  • If the call is on Askable, click Join Call; the researcher must start the call before you can join (you'll see "Waiting for call to start").

  • Message the researcher via the session Inbox / Messages — see How can I locate my meeting link and contact the researcher.

  • If they don't appear within ~10 minutes, contact Help & support with your study name and booked time — you may still be eligible for your reward.
