Participant Etiquette Guide

Being a great research participant isn’t rocket science, but a few simple steps can make a big difference.

Updated yesterday

By following these tips, you’ll help researchers get the best results while ensuring a smooth and enjoyable experience for yourself. It’s a win-win!

☝️ Please note if your session does not follow the required setup, your incentive may not be paid.

⏰ Be on time

Show up 5-10 minutes early, whether it’s online or in-person. This gives you a chance to settle in and get ready to give your best.

🔇 Find your quiet zone

Be present and distraction-free. Before you start, make sure you’re somewhere quiet and safe where you won’t be interrupted (e.g., not walking around, commuting, or multitasking).

Turn off the TV, silence your phone, and let the people around you know you need some focus time. If you have little ones at home, try to ensure they’re looked after during your session so you can participate without distractions. We understand it’s not always easy, but it helps everyone get the most out of the experience.

🗣️ No right or wrong answers

You’re here to share your honest opinions, so please don’t worry about giving the ‘right’ answers. Just be honest and speak your mind. Your insights will help our researchers shape better products, services, and experiences.

💡 Stay engaged

To get the most out of your session, please listen carefully, ask questions if you’re unsure, and give thoughtful feedback. Be as descriptive as possible - elaborate on your thoughts, and speak your mind. The more detail you provide, the more valuable your input will be.

For AI moderated interviews and tasks, if you can’t give the session your full attention right now, please pause and come back when you’re ready.

👕 Dress (comfy) smart casual

For video sessions, go for smart casual dress. Wear whatever makes you feel presentable, polished, and most importantly, comfortable! Your video will be reviewed so please be dressed appropriately.

📹 Video standards

Be seated upright in a well-lit, quiet environment where your face is clearly visible. Be aware of what may be visible in the background of your video. Interviews completed in dark, noisy, or reclined settings will be rejected, and your incentive may not be paid. Your video will be reviewed to confirm these requirements are met, so please take a moment now to ensure your environment meets these standards.

👋 Need to cancel? No problem.

Life happens. Please be considerate when cancelling your attendance. Your cancellation can affect the research project.

Seek to reschedule your session instead of cancelling. You can do this by sending the Research a Message from the opportunity page.

If you need to cancel, please do it as soon as you can or with at least 24 hours notice before your session. This gives the researchers time to organise a replacement participant.

☕ Relax and enjoy your session

Remember, there’s no script. Researchers want your real thoughts, so relax and be yourself. This is your time to share your voice and make an impact - enjoy it!
