Types of Research Opportunities I can take part in as a Participant

This article will help you understand more about our different types of research opportunities Askable has to offer.

Research opportunities come in many shapes and sizes at Askable. You can apply for whichever types suit you best — here's what each involves.

📹 Video calls

One of the most popular opportunity types. Run 1-on-1 or as a group (focus group), either on Askable Sessions (our own tool) or a third-party tool (Zoom, Microsoft Teams, Google Meet) where you'll be sent a meeting link. You'll need a working microphone and webcam. Device requirements are stated when you apply or are invited. See Askable Sessions Troubleshooting.

🧮 Surveys

A quick way to give feedback — usually 5–10 minutes, on the go, at home, or at work.

⭐ After finishing a survey, come back to your Askable account and mark yourself as Complete to get paid.

🗣️ AI interviews

Like a video interview, but you talk with an AI researcher instead of a person. You'll need a working webcam and microphone. At the end, the AI thanks you and ends the call — Askable then automatically marks you complete and processes your reward (no manual step needed). If it errors or freezes, see The Task/Survey won't load and Sessions Troubleshooting.

📱 Online tasks

Digital activities where you contribute to a website or design — finding info in a menu, card sorting, or thinking aloud about a design.

⭐ For tasks that take you outside Askable, come back and mark yourself as Complete within 120 minutes of starting to get paid.

📲 Online tasks within Askable

Some tasks keep you on the Askable platform and may ask you to turn on your camera and mic to talk us through what you're doing. At the end, a Thank You screen appears — hit Back to Askable and you'll be marked complete automatically and your reward processed.

👋 In-person

Run face-to-face — at the researcher's workplace, a public spot (library, café, co-working space), or your own home/office. The opportunity will say if it's in person. A more intimate, high-impact way to contribute.

📚 Diary / ongoing / multi-step studies

Longer "longitudinal" studies that test a full experience over days, weeks, or months (e.g. a shopping experience or software over time). These pay a higher incentive to reflect the commitment.

⚠️ If you don't complete a diary study in full, you forfeit the full incentive — so only join if you can commit. 🤓

How do I get selected?

Applying doesn't guarantee a spot — see How to apply for paid opportunities, I am on the waitlist, and Why am I ineligible. A complete profile makes you up to 4x more likely to be selected — see How to Boost your Profile.
