AI Moderated Interviews – how they work & troubleshooting

How AI moderated interviews work, device and browser requirements, and how to fix common errors before, during, and after the interview.

What is an AI Moderated Interview?

An AI interview feels like a video interview — but instead of a person, you talk with an AI researcher that asks the questions. You answer out loud (or by typing) at a time that suits you, and the AI follows up naturally, just like an interviewer would.

When you're done, the AI thanks you and ends the call. Askable then automatically marks you complete and processes your reward — there's no manual "mark complete" step for AI interviews.

Before you start

  • Use Chrome on desktop where possible (avoid in-app browsers opened from social apps).

  • Allow camera and microphone — the interview can't get past the device check without them.

  • Turn off any VPN or ad-blocker (a VPN can also block login entirely).

  • Find a quiet spot with a stable connection.

How long does it take?

Each interview shows an estimated duration — treat it as a guide. A session can run a little shorter or longer depending on your answers, and you're still paid the full advertised reward regardless of exact length (it's for completing the interview, not an hourly rate). Troubleshooting

"An unknown error has occurred" when I press Start

Almost always a browser/permissions issue. Work through these in order:

  1. Refresh and try again.

  2. Switch to Chrome.

  3. Allow camera + microphone (see below).

  4. Turn off VPN/ad-blockers, clear cache, or try an incognito window.

  5. Try a different device.

It froze or stopped responding (often at/after the camera & mic check)

  • Make sure camera and mic are allowed — in Chrome, click the lock icon next to the URL → Site Settings → enable Camera and Microphone → refresh.

  • Make sure no other app (Zoom, Teams, FaceTime) is using your camera.

  • Refresh and reopen from My opportunities.

"Submit complete failed" after I finished

If the error appeared after you completed the interview, your participation is usually still recorded (AI interviews auto-complete) — don't redo it. If the status doesn't update within a day, contact Help & support with your study name and completion date. See Track completion & reward processing.

My interview link won't open / "please resend the link"

Check My opportunities, Inbox / Messages, and your email (including spam). If it still won't open, note the study name and contact Help & support.

I had to stop partway through — can I restart?

Yes. Go back to the opportunity in your Askable account and start the interview again, the same way you started it the first time. If it won't load, fully close the app or browser, reopen, and try again — or switch networks (Wi-Fi to mobile data).

⚠️ Try to complete the interview in one sitting when you can give it your full attention. Interviews that run under about 15 minutes may be reviewed and could affect your account.

Will I still get paid if it failed?

Yes — if an AI interview genuinely fails, you won't miss out. These failures are sometimes a platform issue on our end, so let us know and we'll make sure it's sorted. No need to keep retrying endlessly.

After the interview

Your reward processes automatically — usually within up to 5 business days (Pending check → Pending → Rewarded). Track it in Profile → Rewards. See Where can I find my payment?.
